Hiroya Nakamura

Hiroya Nakamura comes from a family that has been producing washi and supplying temples and shrines with washi products. He spent eight years working for the family business. During that time, handmade washi caught his attention especially for its unlimited possibilities and its charm. Later he decided to pass down the tradition, culture and value of washi making (because of this, in May 2019, he changed his pseudonym from ARATA to Hiroya). This led him to becoming an independent artist.

His artistic concept is based on a rich cohabitation with washi as an element that brings excitement and joy. The artist makes a wide range of washi products including jewellery featuring innovative ideas and design. He excels at making washi-based imitation leather using his skillful hands and drawing inspiration from the nature. Products for everyday use are another creation in his washi opus.
